World cricket recognizes Sourav Ganguly as one of the best captains for India and in the world. There are reasons more than words can explain. Everyone knows that he took over the reins of the team at the worst time of Indian cricket which was overshadowed by dark clouds of match-fixing in 2000. Big names fell on their knees, some proven guilty and some not, some still fighting for justice. This was the time when the fans questioned their idols. They realized that the priests of their other religion had betrayed them. A revelation that shook the foundation of the gentlemen’s game!

I remember there were skeptics when he was chosen to lead the team. I was one of them. And boy oh boy, did he lead! India started winning games. We began winning abroad. Ganguly realized that he had some great players on the team. He needed a few more to make the perfect combination. Sehwag, Harbhajan, Yuvraj, Zaheer to name a few found their place in the playing 11. This was a good combination of experience and hot blood. The team had taken a new turn in its destiny which led it to become a force to reckon with. And this team bought back fans to the matches. People again started switching their channels to where the match was on. Everything was back in order.

Ganguly allowed his players to counter the opponent’s aggression with the player’s own style. Some preferred to let their game do their talking. The young blood blindly followed their captain and even used words to a good extent. The team who used to look away started looking back straight into the eye. And even initiate sledging. Even the coolest head of world cricket, Dravid didn’t stop himself from matching fire with fire. And we, the fans loved the challenge and relished the victories.

However, now I feel the team is doing good when it comes to performance but the current trend of their mindset is something I am worried about. In the long run, it might grow into a bad tree from this seed. The seed of arrogance! We have a great team now. The team is capable of reining as the champion side repeatedly. We have our best pace battery now who has won us matches on many occasions. Bumrah, Bhuvi, Shami, Ishant, Umesh, Pandya to name the regulars. Soon we will have more fast bowlers coming up from the domestic circuit. The future looks hopeful. And then there are players like Shaw & Gill who are just waiting to get an opportunity to play in the main 11. We know that knock on their doors isn’t too far away. IPL has turned out to be a farm for emerging players. This is working very well for India.

The commercialization of the game has also been a hidden enemy for its own good. The way fans have started seeing their star players have changed. Earlier they considered them as gods, legends, inspiration, etc. Now they are seen as glamorous celebrities. People now don’t want to be like them but be them. The sense of falsehood has started creeping in. The rise before the fall! Well, I certainly hope there’s no fall ahead but if the management doesn’t act on the discovered disease, it will turn into an epidemic. It always has. And the treatment has to start with the people who are holding the responsibility of managing the players and developing them.

I was shocked to learn that the top section of BCCI consisted of people who have had negligible playing stats. India has always had great cricketers. They are now either commentators or somehow related to the game in a minimal way or doing absolutely something different. Well, I am not correct entirely. They appointed Ravi Shastri as the coach and he shared the accolades of the victories with the team. This is a good team, its bound to win more games than others but what is lacking are championship trophies. India under Kohli & Shastri hasn’t won them. We are among the top 3 teams in all 3 versions of the game but no trophies to show when it comes to world championships.

Also when Kohli became the main reason for Kumble’s resignation as the coach of the team, it infuriated me. Apparently, the team had issues with the level of discipline that Kumble expected everyone to follow. And then the interview with Karan Johar where we saw a distasteful side of the young generation. It’s not fair to generalize that mindset on everyone so let’s just keep it with the players who faced the heat as a repercussion of the interview. My point is that they had the audacity to say anything they felt like without being responsible for the people who follow them as players. Then during the ODI world cup 2019, there were reports of a player sharing the hotel room with his spouse. It was a rule that during major tournaments, players would stay only with themselves, not family. I don’t know the reason for this rule but a rule is a rule. These days cricket is being played throughout the year, hence the players need to take breaks from some series to let their body do the healing. Else a small injury could turn out to be something grave. But this has to be decided by the support team. I don’t think it’s up to a player to decide when and where he wants to play or not.

I just highlighted a few concerns. I am repeating myself for the 1000th time that we have a good team now and our bench strength is getting stronger. Every institution has good procedures to follow. If its not followed then the journey to the zenith ends up in the nadir. This is where Dada has walked in. Once again, he has been handed the reins of not only the team but the future of India’s cricket. He has rescued the game way back when he took the captaincy and I am certain that he will sort out issues to ensure that India rules the game of cricket for a long time.

In Dada we trust!

India vs Pakistan. World Cup 2019. Old Trafford, Manchester

Image result for india vs pakistan world cup 2019

Undoubtedly the biggest match on the planet to take place every 4 years. No I don’t mean the biggest cricket match but the biggest in terms of sports on the planet.

The political relation between both the countries never saw the dawn of peace right from the time of partition. The pressure to outdo each other has always been tremendous and many a times not sportingly or humanely. This match was significantly important post the Pulwama incident where Indian soldiers were killed by Pakistani based terrorists. Followed by the counter response by the Indian government which resulted in isolation Pakistan on many diplomatic counts. The stakes were never this high since Kargil. Both sides needed to win against the other. Violence would cause repercussions that would take decades to repair. Cricket was the answer. Its followed as a religion on both the sides of the border. A win against this opponent would heal many a wounds.

India and Pakistan has faced each other 7 times in the world cup. India heads 7-0. Usually Pakistan would give a tough fight before succumbing to the Indian onslaught with the bat and the ball. But this year was not exactly a fight. It was a meek surrender. Before the match, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr Imran Khan advised what the Pakistani Captain needed to do to taste fruitful results. But Sarfaraz had other plans on the ground:

This is the Yawn of the decade. Sarfaraz is going to have to live with it for the rest of his life. The weather predicted that there was 80% chance of rain so upon winning the toss, Pakistan put India to bat. Kohli said he too would have opted to bat but this loss of toss was a blessing in disguise. Rohit Hitman Sharma opened the innings with KL Rahul in the absence of Dhawan who suffered from a fracture on his right thumb in the previous match which playing an innings of a lifetime. Boy what a start India had. KL grabbed the opportunity with both his hands and played a patient knock of 57 runs, more importantly after securing a solid opening stand of 136 runs. Rohit Sharma played a typical Hitman innings of 140 runs off 113 deliveries with 3 signature towering sixes. Am sure the Pakistani players had no answers to his assault.

Me being an Indian, was super proud of this conquest but expected a fight from the neighbors. They did fight for a while but never made us nervous. Team India was just waiting for 1 wicket which would hopefully collapse a majority of the Pakistani batting and thats what exactly happened. Men in green were no match to the men in blue.

Team India was victorious for the 7th straight time against the arch rivals, Pakistan.

This is what players from the other teams had to say about this match. Enjoy!

Team India. March 2019

With the backdrop of the nation on fire over its interests, team India isn’t as it was in 2018. On top of them they have managed to find themselves in the soup over playing against Pakistan in the World Cup. This is a champions team and losing is a part of the game. That’s not the point. My views are on their spirits when on the field. There’s no doubt whatsoever over their intention to win but I feel some circumstances are leaking their intensity. Without a doubt playing in the main 11 of the country is a huge responsibility and it would need nerves of steel to cement playing spot consistently.

These are troubled times and at the need of the hour comes the legend to hold the team together. We might speculate over this ability to hit the boundary consistently at this age but when was cricket only about the boundaries? It was always about winning, just winning! And MSD has changed his gears but is still delivering as a batsmen, wicket keeper and the guardian of the team. He is the person the youngsters would look upto and get inspired. The Indian team is filled with batsmen who could hit boundaries at will but they needed someone to absorb the heat when the chips are down, analyze the situation and execute the plan. Dravid used to do this for his team very well. Often I have heard comments about the middle order not being well tested, I feel like replying everytime to them “Test all except Dhoni. He will deliver some way or other”.

I hope the team gets good enough rest post the World Cup. They have been playing too much cricket. Players with the intensity level of Kohli might wear out if they are not given the required team to let off the steam in the form of breaks. Surely the body too needs time to heal from the pressure of playing at this level. Maybe that’s when the next generation players should be put to test, putting the main players on vacation. Surely the BCCI is a management that knows how to take care of its players. We are lucky to have a pace battery in the form of Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar, Shami and Yadav among the top. The bowlers on the bench are not bad either.

Pandya and Jadeja provides the option of explosive batsmen, handy bowler and outstanding fielder. It is going to be interesting to see who’s going to bat at 3,4 & 5.  Rohit has almost sealed his position at #1. Dhawan might face threat from KL. The new KL looks good, the intensity is back. The coffee did rush his adrenaline. Kohli’s batting position would be the key. Shastri might want to preserve him at 2nd down but as they they, you should let your best batsmen face as many deliveries as possible and he has conquered the batting world at #3. Wonder what happened to Rahane?

The excitement among the next generation players is also overwhelming. People do want to see guys like Shaw, Gill, Mavi to name a few. The IPL will definitely help the players get warmed up for the World Cup, but i pray it doesn’t burn them out.

England vs India 1st test, Birmingham

We could smell victory right from day 1, nearly won it but eventually it slipped off our hands. This has been the fate of the 1st test of any away series, for long. This time we went the closest to winning it. That’s a positive way of looking at it for a die hard cricket fan. And being a lover of the game, I am equally mad with the outcome of the match!

Kgc-UR1L_400x400

Shikhar Dhawan is not made for the red ball version of the game. He doesn’t have the temperament to match a good test opponent. This is not just about his abysmal batting but also his fielding. A player is known as a bad fielder even if he drops a catch, dropping 3 is an unpardonable sin. He is known more for his batting abilities. So that front could have been something he would have amended his wrongs with. But fate had some other plans. Its very surprising that he keeps getting so many chances when now we can boast of a great bench strength. The yo-yo test isn’t everything. Mr Shastri should really re-consider his strategies. Same goes with Murali Vijay. He has only 1 good score (vs Afghanistan) in his last 10 innings. His love affair with bad form has stuck with him since the South African tour like a fungus that he isn’t able to get rid off. Even if the somewhat crazy think tank decide on playing Vijay for another game, they should replace Dhawan.

Virat Kohli, the current king of the cricketing world. This is being Rambo in sports. Had it been a domestic match, he could have won the team a match single-handedly. However, the subject is international test and against one of toughest test nations. Its a team game, 1 player cannot balance the equation of the rest of the batsmen. He played with a lion’s heart. I wonder if he’s repenting his decision not to play Pujara. I am sure Rahane will bounce back. He’s just going through a bad time. He has played some splendid knocks for India. Some might object Pujara’s selection due to his stats against the playing conditions. He too is known for holding up 1 end even if the runs had dried up. In the 1st match that’s something no one could do. The 2nd test team composition will be interesting!

New Zealand v India - 2nd Test: Day 5

Joe Root is turning out to be a good captain. Forget his first Ashes as a captain. Its evident that he is learning and as a batsmen, another King! The England team played like a champion side. They might not have the mace now, but soon they will.

This team is not balanced. If I was the part of the think tank, I would have played KL Rahul to open with Vijay followed by Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, DK, Pandya and the lower order. We have Nair and Pant too on the bench.

INDvsPAK CT2017

Well yes it hurts to lose to Pakistan especially in the finals! Pakistan deserved to be the winner. They outplayed India in all the departments of the game. Congratulations! My respect for coach Micky Arthur has increased 10 folds now. He saw the vulnerability of the batsmen after the top 3 and exposed it bluntly. This indeed cost us the trophy. Also I feel Kumble didn’t plan proper on how to combat Amir. Rohit Sharma’s stats against Amir is appalling. And he got all top 3 in his 6 overs.

Emotionally I would love to see Yuvi & Dhoni play for another 10 years. But realistically they are ageing and there is a huge prospect of young Indian players brewing at the back ground. Players who too needs to be given experience at the international level. There is a stream of opinion who thinks its just a game and everything is fine. I beg to differ. This was the final of the tournament we were set to defend. Losing to Pakistan in a final is really sad. Doesn’t matter if the middle order had less match experience but what about career experience? The mighty Indian batting lineup consists of only 3. Both these players will have to deliver match winnings innings more often.

I wonder what is Ravinder Jadeja considered as? All rounder or bowler? His bowling stats of the CT 2017 is heart breaking. The #1 bowler in tests goes wicket less in a major tournament. And if an all rounder he failed when it mattered the most. Maybe a bad day at work for most of the Indian players or maybe this is where some signs shouldn’t be overlooked.
